For a 3-year old, Matthew's grip was pretty strong. He clutched onto Dominick Massaro's pillar of a leg and held it all afternoon. Matthew said nothing. A blond cherub with a grip.

Massaro felt the warmth of love. He thought of Matthew all the next year, looked forward to the annual Farano House holiday party. Couldn't wait to see him.

But Matthew didn't make it. "He died two months ago" his foster mother told Massaro. She had already taken in a new child, also terminally ill.

Grief crushed his euphoria. It made Dominick Massaro ask himself, What can I do?

- Excerpt from Albany Times Union, Sunday, June 20, 1999

This is where the vision for The Palms Of The Oasis, Inc. began. From that moment in time, Dominick and Josephine Massaro ventured out to begin what would change their world. In 1992, the Massaros knew they must do something to make a difference in the lives of people living in their community. Little did they know that this little boy, Matthew, would inspire them to reach out in a way that they never would have dreamed of.

From that time, they began to see gaps in services to the community. To address this gap, a journey began to build a camp/respite for children, families and individuals infected and/or affected by HIV/AIDS and addiction issues.

The first step of this journey began with a piece of land that grew into a camp which would become a “shelter from the storm.”

This camp, The Tenori House, has been built over seven years, completely through the donation of materials, money and labor. It has been a journey of trials, frustration, joy, challenges and stepping out into waters that were unknown.

These challenges have been a catalyst in the leap of faith that it has taken not only to build this camp, but to run The Palms completely with volunteers.

Josephine and Dominick Massaro live in Niskayuna, New York, have eight grown children and seven grandchildren.

Our Vision

For children, families, and individuals facing the hard reality of being infected/affected with HIV/AIDS and /or coping with addiction issues, the Palms of the Oasis helps alleviate some of the burdens not met by other resources or programs. Services can be easily accessed with the referral of an agency, church or health care facility.
