imageWhen I first learned of Palms of the Oasis, Inc I knew instantly that it was a volunteer opportunity I wanted to pursue. Not only was I attracted to the mission statement and goals, but also the dedication of the other volunteers, the excellent reputation, and the ability to grow with a non-profit group. Working with the Palms of the Oasis has allowed me to put my knowledge of sociology, and human services into action as well as my passion for the field.

Originally from Mechanicville, New York, I graduated early from Le Moyne College in Syracuse with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Crime and Justice Studies and a minor in Sociology. While at Le Moyne, I was a teaching assistant for three sociology classes, secretary of the Crime Club, member of Ameri-Corps, and worked on campus in the Resident Life/Office of Judicial Affairs. Additionally, I earned recognition as a member of Pi Gamma Mu (International Honor Society in Social Science) and Alpha Phi Sigma (National Criminal Justice Society) as well as several other academic honors. Le Moyne confirmed my passion for criminal justice studies through volunteer groups and classroom instruction.

After graduating from Le Moyne, I began working for CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, Inc. in Clifton Park as an administrative assistant. I also had the opportunity to work very closely with the community through various programs and events such as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) where I served as the site coordinator. I am also a Friend of the Clifton Park/Halfmoon Library and volunteer for the Saratoga County Youth Court. Additionally, I volunteer as a supervisor for the Teen Talk/Phone Friend crisis hotline through CAPTAIN.

Most recently, I started working for New York State at the University at Albany in the Student Loan Service Center as a calculations clerk. As a clerk in the new loans department, I prepare documents and files in an effort to get the process moving to collect on the loan when the student separates from the campus. This includes anything from filing, scanning, making sure the proper documents are filled out correctly and signed, labeling the documents and sending letters to students. The Student Loan Service Center handles student loans from all of the 29 SUNY campuses. Much different than my work at CAPTAIN, but still an area I have a great interest in.

Through my work experience and other volunteer experience, I have learned the importance of working as a strong team, solid communication, and ability to follow a task through to completion. More importantly, I have learned and realized the profound impact one person or group can have on another. It is for this reason I love volunteering and working with the Palms of the Oasis!
